Artur Boruc threw a bottle, and Tottenham Hotspur very nearly lost theirs. The Southampton goalkeeper had questions to answer last night after becoming involved in an altercation with his own fans during the first half of this game.
Reports suggested that after conceding Southampton’s second goal, he responded to the jeers coming from behind him by sarcastically applauding the fans, before hurling a water bottle in their direction.
The club are liaising with their security staff to establish what actually happened. If a case can be made against Boruc, a free transfer from Fiorentina making his home debut, he can expect swift and summary disciplinary action.
And yet, from these unpromising embers of malcontent, Southampton somehow found the fire and the strength to launch a furious late assault that almost burgled them a point. Down here, they know better than most how quickly a tide can turn.
Nigel Adkins will certainly hope so. He will have been encouraged by Southampton’s second-half improvement, not that they could have played any worse than they did in the first 45 minutes.
