FA CUP Middlesbrough 1 - 0 Shrewsbury Town

A r40th minute strike from Marvin Emnes, who chested down and volleyed home from eight yards after a cross from Malaury Martin, proved the difference between the sides in this third round tie.

But Graham Turner’s men can count themselves very unfortunate not to have earned a replay against a side who ply their trade two divisions higher and are pushing for promotion.

Lionel Ainsworth wasted the visitors best chance of the game when he fired wide from eight yards with the scores goalless.

Matt Richards and Terry Gornell also forced saves from ‘Boro goalkeeper Jason Steele while Mark Wright and Sean McAllister were only fractions wide with efforts from the edge of the box.

Town also had a penalty appeal turned down in the last 10 minutes when substitute James Collins went down under a challenge from ‘Boro’s replacement goalkeeper Danny Coyne, while Marvin Morgan saw an injury time effort well saved by Coyne.

The home side had their moments too with Chris Neal making one superb save from Bart Ogbeche, but Town were well worth a replay.
